LIDAR

Acronym for light detection and ranging. LIDAR is an active sensor that collects accurate measurements using a laser emitter and receiver. LIDAR sensors send out a signal from the remote sensing platform such as an aircraft. As the signal hits a surface it returns energy back to the source; one or multiple signals can be returned along with a signal strength. LIDAR return data includes the X, Y, and Z values and an intensity value — which is the pulse return magnitude. The XYZ data is typically used as a LIDAR point cloud or is reformatted to a TIN or grid, whereas the strength of the signal is used to create an ortho intensity image. SOCET GXP can read LIDAR data in ASCII or LAS file formats.

LIDAR data allows for detailed surface analysis. SOCET GXP can read LIDAR data in the ASCII and LAS file formats.
